Wendy Hiller - Wonderful Woman No. 73

Wendy Hiller - 1912–2003
British Actress

A good old fashioned northern lass, who conquered the world of stage and screen.

Wendy's first professional acting role was as Sally Hardcastle in the original stage version of Love on the Dole. I have a real affection for this play, I played Sally myself whilst at college. The play, set in the slums of Salford, requires a convincing northern accent and an understanding of the sacrifices women make in hard times. The play was a huge success and catapulted Wendy into success.

Her stage career spanned six decades and saw Wendy play some iconic roles including parts in Pygmalion, Twelth Night and Henrik Ibsen's Ghosts. She was a Tony Award winner and worked alongside some of theatre's greatest names, such as John Gielgud, Basil Rathbone and Michael Redgrave.

I loved her in I Know Where Im Going.

Wendy had a fantastic film career, she was the first British Actress to be nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Eliza Doolittle in the film version of Pygmalion. She went on to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 1958 film Separate Tables. As well as film, she also appeared on television both in the United Kingdom and the USA.

She seemed as true on screen as on the stage... but the stage stole her heart.

A wonderful actress, with a long and successful career.

I was unbelievably lucky.
