Good to see another fellow female DJ and record lover here, it seems like some time since I wrote about Annie Nightingale (Wonderful Woman No. 23 - http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/392286_10151161035680481_655370480_22741852_1552640228_n.jpg).

In 1990, after already become a regular on the British club scene, Jo noticed the distinct lack of women behind the decks. It was this noticable void that prompted Jo to invest in some turntables and start mixing.

Sure that she would face difficulty in trying to obtain gigs as a woman, she adopted the androgynous moniker Smokin' Jo, borrowed from the boxer Smokin' Joe Fraser.

Jo plays at gigs across the globe, is a particular favourite in Ibiza. Her talent is widely recognised, indeed she is the only female DJ to have been awarded DJ Magazine's DJ of the Year Award.

As well as spinning, Jo produces music with Pete Gleadall under the name TRNSSTR. She was part of a group of DJs and promoters who created the NastyDirtySexMusic events, which were internationally successful and Jo has since promoted her own club night Nude - I was a club promoter in Manchester for five years, let me tell you, it's damned hard work, credit to all those that do is duely deserved.

I have never seen Jo behind the decks but Sarah, who added her to the album, tells me she is amazing. So for that reason, for representing ladies of the decks and for all her successes, Jo is a most welcome wonderful woman.
