Charlotte Gainsbourg - Wonderful Woman No. 75

Charlotte Gainsbourg - Born 1971
French Actress and Singer

Added to the album by GĂ©raldine, a wonderful woman

I believe this is the first daughter of a previous Wonderful Woman to be included as a member of the Wonderful Women sorority herself. Charlotte Gainsbourg is the daughter of the controversial lovers Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin (Wonderful Woman No. 74 - http://iamawonderfulwoman.blogspot.com/2012/03/jane-birkin-wonderful-woman-no-74.html). She is a woman that at the age of forty has already enjoyed a thirty-seven year long career in both music and film, with a number of controversies of her very own.

In 1984, thirteen year old Charlotte appeared in her first film and released her first record. The record Lemon Incest was recorded with her father, Serge and caused outrage, as many believed it to encourage incest and paedophilia (accusations denied by Serge). In spite of the uproar, the record was hugely successful, staying in the French top ten for ten weeks.

It's about the pure love of a father and a daughter. Of course there's the ambiguity in the chorus. My father was always attracted to provocation. He didn't have to explain the song. I knew him, and I knew I had nothing to be embarrassed about.
Charlotte Gainsbourg

Charlotte released her debut album two years later and has totalled four studio albums to date. She has recorded with Madonna and Beck and her music is popular in the USA as well as France.

She has had a lengthy film career, making mostly French films. In 2009, she received the Award for Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in the highly controversial film Antichrist. She has also appeared on stage and on television.

Charlotte is the survivor of a cerebral hemorrhage, for which she underwent surgery in 2007. The song IRM which she recorded with Beck is based on this experience and about her paranoia about illness after the event (IRM being the French acronym for MRI). Charlotte had insisted on numerous scans after her surgery, having convinced herself she would become ill again.

Like her mother, Charlotte is also considered a style icon.

Here for all her own successes but also as a representation of wonderful daughters.

You think that being a girl is degrading, but secretly, you'd love to know what it's like, wouldn't you?
Charlotte Gainsbourg
